Make time:matters your homepage The Special Service Desk employee Elisa Braun receives an especially interesting inquiry: 250 kilograms of radioactive material are to be flown from Frankfurt am Main to Algiers. In this particular case the most important aspect is security, not speed.
Special inquiries require special logistic solutions
Aside from the radiation, both the size and amount of the shipment also present a special logistical challenge. In order to be able to import radioactive material to Algeria, specific import licenses, landing rights and overflight rights must be observed. Since radiation of the shipment is classified as “high,” it cannot be transported on a scheduled flight. Therefore the logistics expert Elisa Braun decides in favor of a charter flight from Frankfurt Hahn (HHN).
Secure transport of hazardous materials
A driver, who is specially trained to transport radioactive material on the road, brings the hazardous material shipment to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, where it is loaded on board the charter flight in compliance with high security standards. After the import regulations for the transport of radioactive materials in Algeria have been clarified, the machine can take off. Approximately 2.5 hours later the highly hazardous shipment reaches Algiers Airport (ALG). There another special transporter picks up the radioactive material and brings it securely to the nuclear power plant.
