Logistics Solution of the Month

  •
  • It is an open secret that a disruption in the supply chain represents
one of the great risks to modern just-in-time production methods. An
assembly line standstill caused by supply problems can easily cost the
affected company more than 100,000 euro per hour.

  • The head of the branch office of an internationally positioned bank headquartered in Frankfurt traveled to Peking for an important business meeting. Upon his arrival, he realized that he had forgotten his heart medication, which must be taken every day, in Germany. Since the tablets are unavailable in China, he immediately calls his assistant in Germany, so that she can send the vital medicine to him as quickly as possible.

  • A well-known automobile company in Germany has been ordering its electric cable in China for a long time and until now everything has gone according to plan; thus ensuring round-the-clock production. However, this time not enough cable was ordered and an unexpected production increase took care of the rest: the current stock would only suffice for, at most, one more day. The automobile manufacturer must obtain electric cable as quickly as possible, in order to avoid an assembly line standstill and subsequent costs associated with downtimes amounting to a six-digit euro figure.

  • An automobile manufacturer in Barcelona needs important machine spare parts. Six pallets à 160 kg have to be transported from the central warehouse in Germany to the factory in Spain. Otherwise a shutdown and a loss in production with cost about 100.000€ per hour menaces are imminent.

  • April 2010 – The ash cloud has caused airports throughout Europe to close and there are virtually no regular flight connections. Nevertheless, the clock is ticking for a patient, who is waiting for an urgently needed stem cell transplantation, at a hospital in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

  • At the Special Service Desk (SSD) from time:matters a call comes in on Thursday March 27 at 13:00, that a shipment for a five star luxury hotel must be delivered from Vienna to Adeje, located in southern Tenerife. In this particular case the most important aspect is reliability, not speed.

  • A photographer is supposed to take fashion pictures on the beach in Cape Town for a large German mail-order company. Unfortunately some of the clothing for the models and the photo equipment were left behind in Frankfurt. However, the photo shoot cannot take place without these important accessories, which would mean an enormous loss of both time and money for the company.

  • The Special Service Desk employee Elisa Braun receives an especially interesting inquiry: 250 kilograms of radioactive material are to be flown from Frankfurt am Main to Algiers. In this particular case the most important aspect is security, not speed.

Special inquiries require special logistic solutions

  • Malaysia, emerging “tiger state” in Southeast Asia. Engineers have been working on behalf of a Dutch energy company for some time on a large gas extraction project close to Miri, a city in the Eastern Malaysian province of Sarawak. Work is going “smoothly,” the technicians are making good progress – until mid-April when one of the most important machines of the entire project breaks down.
